Kloqe -- a stylish all-aluminum case for iPhone [Review]
If you’d have asked me a week ago if I wanted a new case for my iPhone 5s, I’d have said no. I already own two cases -- an official Apple one in black, and a photo case with a picture of my daughter on. Both serve my needs perfectly. Another case? No thanks, no need.
A week later, and my view has changed completely. I have a third case, a Kloqe, and it’s the only one I’m likely to ever want or use. Kloqe is an all-aluminum affair that doesn’t interfere with phone reception, and comes in the same range of colors as the iPhone -- black, white, gray and champagne/gold. You can choose the one that matches your phone or go for something different.
The case was successfully funded on Kickstarter back in February -- the creators sought $25,000 and received $34,873 in pledges -- and is the brainchild of Sergio Troiani who wanted to create a metal case that mimics the look and feel of the iPhone, without causing any signal issues.
Unlike a lot of cases, Kloqe is solid, so you don’t wedge your phone inside it. Instead you press on the (removable) sticker on the back, and slide the bottom of the case off, insert your phone, push it all the way in, and then reattach the bottom section. There’s a felt patch inside and a .04 mm air gap between the side of the phone and the case, so there’s no metal on metal scratching to worry about.
The case makes the phone feel slightly heavier and bulkier, although in truth it only adds 4mm to the height and width, and there’s a real quality feel to it. The iPhone is (in my opinion) a thing of beauty, and Kloqe succeeds in fully complementing the look of the device.
The bottom of the case has a hole for the speaker, microphone, charger and headphone socket, and there are buttons for power and volume built into the case. There’s a gap for the ringer toggle, and this is my only complaint about the Kloqe -- if you don’t have long fingernails, it can be hard to access this. I have to use a pen, or any similar nearby implement. There’s not much the developers could do about this I’d imagine, and it’s certainly not a deal breaker for me, but it’s something to be aware of if you regularly use that button to mute your phone.
I’ve had no problems with signal strength since I started using the case, and calls are no less clear either.
