Facebook wants to become your calendar and life-planning app

Android and iOS users are about to find that Facebook is much more useful. A new update that is rolling out across the US brings personalized notifications to the app that extend far beyond details of status updates and birthdays.

To help you keep on top of your schedule, Facebook now also displays information about friends' life events, reminders about TV shows, details about events you've joined, and sports scores. There are also a number of optional components that are tailored to where you are.

To help you find out more about what's going on around you, as long as you enable the Location History setting, Facebook can keep you updated with the local weather forecast. On top of this, you can learn about events that are taking place in the area, movies that are showing, and suggestions for places to eat.

Introducing the new features, Facebook says:

With this update, your current notification settings will not change, and you can adjust those any time in your Settings. You can also customize the info you see by tapping the arrow to the right of each card, or Add More Cards at the bottom of the tab.

We’ll continue to listen to feedback about the information people find most useful and may periodically add more cards to choose from.

The rollout is starting in the US, and Facebook has not indicated when it will spread to other parts of the world.
