If you haven't been to the Smithsonian in Washington DC then you're missing out on a great time. The institution operates a number of museums situated along the mall, bracketing such famous sites as the Washington Monument and memorials to war veterans and past presidents.

Take the Smithsonian and roll in a bit of the BBCs famous Planet Earth documentary and you get the Smithsonian Earth channel.

The channel is launching on Roku 4 and bringing stunning 4K video of the world around us. The channel's goal is "to bring the visually-stunning beauty of nature straight to your TV".

This doesn't come free, you'll need to fork over $3.99 per month, which is rather a low price for this sort of thing. You also get to try it free for seven days before deciding. In exchange for your money you get an ad-free experience.

Those who sign up can watch a variety of new and original programs, which will be updated weekly. These include "documentaries and short series that explore everything from the sea life of Socorro Island, to the creatures of Madagascar and active volcanoes in Ethiopia".

The app is available now in the channel store. You will not get David Attenborough, though.
