Control your home using Sony Android TV, Logitech Harmony Hub, and exclusive beta app

Home automation and control is all the rage nowadays. Doing things such as turning on lights or adjusting a thermostat with a smartphone -- or other connected device -- is not only convenient, but empowering for those with disabilities too. Think about it -- if someone is unable to get out of a bed, for instance, they can utilize this technology to be more independent.

Today, Logitech announces a really cool new way to interface with its Harmony Hub -- Sony Android TVs. By installing a special beta version of the Logitech Harmony app, you can control your home using an on-screen television interface.

"With the Logitech Harmony Android TV App -- available exclusively for Sony's Android TVs -- and a Harmony Hub, you can launch your Harmony Activities straight from your TV screen, controlling your smart home without interrupting your favorite shows or movies. You can download the Harmony app from the Google Play Store on Sony’s Android TVs", says Logitech.

The company further says, "once installed, Sony Android TV owners can simply sign into their existing Harmony account. The app will display their personalized Harmony Activities, and enable them to use a tile-based menu on the Sony Android TV to adjust the lights, lock the front door, or manage the thermostat -- all from the comfort of the couch".

While this looks really intuitive and helpful, it is not clear why Logitech is only supporting Sony TVs. In theory, the app should work with other brands too. Maybe it is simply some sort of limited exclusivity agreement -- who knows. Hopefully this will roll out to more televisions in the future, so even more users can share the experience of controlling their homes with an Android TV.

Do you own a Sony Android TV and a Logitech Harmony Hub? If so, will you try the beta app? Tell me in the comments.
