Xbox Summer Update is rolling out bringing closer Windows 10 integration

It's another couple of days until Windows 10 Anniversary Update rolls out to users, but Xbox One users now have something very exciting to download -- the Xbox Summer Update. Previously available as a preview, the latest system update sees the arrival of Cortana, background music and much more.

Major Nelson has announced that the rollout of the update starts this weekend, but there is no guarantee of when it will arrive on your Xbox One. If you're the impatient kind, you'll be pleased to hear that you can force the update to download and install it straight away!

In addition to the much-asked-for arrival of Cortana and the Background Music options (the arrival of the ability to listen to music while you play games is seen as important enough to warrant Initial Caps!) there are also improvements to Game Collection. Importantly, the update also sees convergence between the Xbox and Windows Stores, with Microsoft saying that this will make it easier to find games and read the most helpful reviews.

Announcing the availability of the update, Microsoft's Major Nelson says:

On the Windows Store, we're adding support so gamers can soon browse and purchase bundles, episodic games, season passes, virtual currency and other game add-ons and DLC. You can also redeem Xbox tokens, subscriptions, games or DLC through the Windows Store. And developers can make their games available for pre-order/pre-download so you can buy a game any time before it launches, play it right when it comes out, and you won’t be billed for your purchase until shortly before the title launches

Full details of the features in the update can be found on Major Nelson's blog. He also shared a video that shows off many of the highlights of the update:

Oh... and if you wanted to know how to force an update, use the following steps:

  1. Scroll left from Home to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.
  4. Under System, select Console info & updates.
  5. Available updates will show in the second button down in the first column.
If an update is available, the button will read Update Available. If your console is already on the current release build, the button will be grayed out and will read No update available.
