Best Windows apps this week

One-hundred and ninety-seven in a series. Welcome to this week's overview of the best apps, games and extensions released for Windows 8.x and Windows 10 in the past seven days.

The week was rather slow in regards to new releases. Microsoft did bring video game pre-orders to the Store however, and seems to have removed thousands of low quality apps recently too.

As always, if I missed an app or game that has been released this week that you believe is particularly good, let me know in the comments below or notify me via email instead.

Discounts this week

Some apps are discounted for more than one week. Starting this week, only new apps and games are listed below. Check out the previous post in the series for past offers that may still be valid.

The following apps and games are discounted by at least 50 percent this week:

Other apps

Halo

halo

The official news and content application for Microsoft's Halo franchise provides you with latest news, video content, tutorials, community content and a marketplace.

Microsoft wants it to be your number one stop for all things Halo.

Halo 5: Forge

halo5-forge

Halo 5: Forge is the latest Forge mode that allows you to create maps for Halo.

The level editor is now available on PC. Not only is it provided for the first time, it is also optimized for PCs as it supports mouse and keyboard input, up to 4K resolutions, improved textures and enhanced controls.

The editor allows you to join multiplayer battles as well which means that you may play Halo multiplayer using the app.

Sling TV

sling

Sling TV is now available for Windows 10 as a new application (there is another for Windows 8)

The app features live and on-demand streaming, provided that you have an account already. Sling is only available in the US, but the application installation is not restricted to the region.

Sling TV features Windows 10 only features such as options to search channels and content using Cortana, or pinning favorite shows to Start.

Tampermonkey (Edge extension, Insider Preview only)

tampermonkey

The Microsoft Edge extension Tampermonkey adds userscript support to the browser. This allows you to load scripts that you create on your own, or load from resources such as GreasySpot to change elements on web pages that you visit.

Basic examples include removing elements that you find irritating or adding content to sites to make them more useful.

Vocabulary Crosswords

crossword

Vocabulary Crosswords offers 200 crossword puzzles designed specifically for users who find regular crossword puzzles too hard to solve.

The main difference in comparison is the focus on commonly used words. This makes it ideal for adults who like crossword puzzles but find them too hard, foreign language students, and children as well.

The layout is confusing at first, as you see the hint only for the select row or column, but not for all of them.

Notable updates

Client for Hangouts (free) updated. Introduces contact syncing with People app, saving unsent messages as drafts, searching by phone number, sharing links to group chat and more.
