Best Windows apps this week

Two-hundred in a series. Welcome to this week's overview of the best apps, games and extensions released for Windows 10 on Windows Store in the past seven days.

No app of the week this time but the new Microsoft Edge extension Turn off the Lights almost made it.

As always, if I missed an app or game that has been released this week that you believe is particularly good, let me know in the comments below or notify me via email instead.

Check out last week's best of Windows apps post if you missed it.

Discounts this week

Some apps are discounted for more than one week. Starting this week, only new apps and games are listed below. Check out the previous post in the series for past offers that may still be valid.

The following apps and games are discounted by at least 50 percent this week:

Other apps

Disko -- Disk Space Finder

disko

Disko is free for the next two days after which it will be available for $9.99.

The application scans the system for media files that take up storage space giving you options to delete some of those files to free it up.

You may use it as well to scan any folder to get a visual representation of files that take up space inside of it.

The app is quite basic if you compare it to programs such as WizTree, my favorite program to find large files and remove them from the system.

FaceRig

facerig

FaceRig is a free program that enables you to embody digital characters using a connected camera and microphone.

You may record the impersonation as a movie, or stream it directly to various popular services including Skype, Twitch, Hangouts, and any other service that supports real-time web cam use.

Custom models can be imported into FaceRig on top of that.

Ganglands: Lord of Crime

ganglands

Ganglands: Lord of Crime is an empire-building game that comes with all the bells and whistles that you'd expect from a game of its kind.

Construct buildings, upgrade them, recruit new forces, attack others, and earn resources while doing so.

The game is free to play and comes with all the mechanics that make these type of games either a "wait until done" or "part with real money to speed things up" kind of affair.

Production quality is good though.

Real Kakuro

real-kakuro

Kakuro is a Japanese logic puzzle game which looks similar to crossword puzzles at first.

The main difference to those is that only numbers are used, and that each number from 1 to 9 can only be used once to bring the total up to the sum displayed on the side of a row or column.

Turn off the Lights (Microsoft Edge extension)

turn-off-the-lights-edge

Turn off the Lights for Microsoft Edge is a port of the popular browser extension.

It enables you to darken background elements in the browser when watching videos.

The extension ships with a massive list of preferences to fine tune the functionality of the extension.

You'll find options to enable automatic mode, change the darkening effect, keyboard shortcuts and a lot more supported.

Notable updates

Fox Sports Go is now available for Xbox.

Minecraft Windows 10 Edition gets free skins support.

MSN Sports and MSN Money apps feature a dark theme now on the Insider channel

Windows Maps updated with Windows Ink support for adding notes, drawings and annotations to road-view maps. Also, hover over places to get additional information, and new direction indicator on phones.
