Facebook's new Events app helps you discover what's going on near you

If you're a keen Facebook user, you may well have accepted invites to events advertised on the social network. To help make your life a little easier, Facebook has now launched a new, dedicated app called simply Events from Facebook to more easily find out what's going on nearby.

More than this, the app can pull in information from your existing calendar so you can see all of your events and appointments in one place to avoid double-booking yourself. It's iOS-only for the time being, but an Android version of the app is in the pipeline.

The idea is a fairly simple one, and with the release of the app Facebook says that "the fear of missing out is becoming a thing of the past". The app will suggest events that you might like to attend based not only on the time and date, but also your location, and the things you have expressed an interest in. Describing the app, Facebooks says:

Events from Facebook [is] a new app we designed for event seekers who are passionate about keeping up with nearby events and finding things to do with their friends. Whether you're looking for something to attend this weekend or just wondering what's happening in your area, Events will help get you there.

Here's how it works:

When you open Events, you can quickly catch up on new events your friends are interested in, recently-announced events by the Pages you like, and updates from events you’re already connected to.

You're not limited to searching for nearby events. If you're planning a trip to a different part of the country, you can search for events in the area to help plan your trip. The app also makes it possible to invite friends to come along with you, and keep track of people you know who might be attending different events.

You can download Events from Facebook from the App Store, and an Android version will make its way to Google Play in due course.
