Samsung will officially unveil Galaxy S8 after MWC 2017

Samsung is expected to introduce the successors to the hugely popular Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge soon. Considering that new devices in the series were introduced during Mobile World Congress in recent years, this year's event seems like a safe bet as to when the unveiling will take place.

However, an official announcement from Samsung indicates that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 edge will actually make their debut later in the year. Samsung is still expected to present them during an Unpacked event, but it will no longer take place during MWC as it did before.

Speaking to The Korea Economic Times, the president of Samsung Electronics' mobile business, Kim Dong-jin, says that the date of the launch will be made public at MWC 2017, meaning that the actual launch will happen sometime after March 2, when the show officially ends.

Samsung indicated this much when it revealed last month why the Galaxy Note7 units caught fire, and it is also in line with rumors claiming that we are looking at a delayed launch. This makes sense, considering how big of a disaster the Galaxy Note7 turned out to be.

Samsung is pushing the envelope in terms of design, and with that comes a risk. The company can't afford to repeat the mistakes it made with the Galaxy Note7, especially with the Galaxy S8 series, which will most likely include its most popular devices in 2017.

Rumors suggest that Unpacked Episode 1 will take place late in March and go on sale the next month. We'll find out soon enough if they're true.
