The OnePlus 5 is now official -- Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 8GB RAM, and a price rise
Three years in the making, the OnePlus 5 -- the company's "most complete and competitive product yet" -- is now official. OnePlus says it's all down to the details, and the company has made endless minor adjustments, and over 100 prototypes to settle on a final design. The handset is just 7.25mm thick, and the overall layout of the phone is all but identical to the OnePlus 3 and 3T -- and yes, there is a headphone jack.
The phone is available in Midnight Black and Slate Gray and the specs are in line with the leaks and rumors we've heard over recent weeks. OnePlus is keen that we don’t focus entirely on specs, but with the inclusion of up to 8GB of RAM, they're hard to ignore -- and it's central to the "smooth experience" the phone offers.
Battery life has been improved by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 as well as the LPDDR4X memory. Software optimization in the form of App Priority helps to keep your most frequently-used apps available when you need them most so they launch quickly.
And, of course, there are the cameras. OnePlus has made much of the camera in the build up to the OnePlus 5 launch, and this handset is a dual lens model. A telephoto lens has been introduced to improve imagery, and the setup is the highest resolution dual camera smartphone available. But it’s the software that's working away when you click the shutter that really makes the difference -- there's built in optimization that automatically chooses the best settings, and improves the output, and there are also professional-level controls available.

Dash Charge is something we've seen before, and it's still used for the OnePlus 5. The proprietary charger takes care of power management, and it offers a day's charge in 30 minutes. Also familiar is OnePlus' take on Android -- Oxygen OS. New features include a special reading mode which automatically adjusts color temperature according to ambient lighting, and expanded screenshots (think vertical panoramas).
OnePlus says that it has relied heavily on customer feedback, citing complaints about the color accuracy of the OnePlus 3 and the subsequent introduction of a new color mode. Similarly, complaints about the noisiness of vibration means that the OnePlus 5 has a more powerful, but quieter vibration motor.
As for pricing, the Midnight Black (8GB+128GB) model costs $539/€559/£499/CAD 719, and the Slate Gray (6GB+64GB) model costs $479/€499/£449/CAD 649. Early drop sales are available on oneplus.net right now, and the device is on open sale from June 27.
