Microsoft to Use Holograms on Windows 2000 CDs

Technicolor, providers of the technology and manufacturing capabilities to produce CDs with holographic images on the disc itself, has been given a 3 year contract with Microsoft to produce Windows 2000 CDs.

While the holograms do not affect the capacity or usability of the discs, they will make it easier to distinguish between a copied CD and a purchased copy.

If a user were to attempt to remove the hologram, the disc becomes ruined and will no longer function.

This technology for edge to edge holographing was codeveloped by 3DCD, a partnership between Technicolor and Applied Holographics PLC. It has been used in the music industry on such projects as the re-release of the Star Wars soundtracks and one of Cher's albums.

Microsoft will begin with Windows 2000 CDs and may continue using the technology for DVDs and other products in the future.
