Transmeta To Unveil Breakthrough Computer Chipset
Transmeta said it will launch a computer processor today that blows the competition out of the water. The Crusoe chipset, as it is known, has been under active development for just under five years.
Little is known about the new chipset, but Newsbytes' sources suggest that the chip could be as revolutionary to the microprocessor industry as Java has been for the Internet.
The chip is expected to be a software-driven design that allows the microprocessor to effectively emulate a number of popular chipsets, quite possibly including those from Intel, its potential major rival.
Because the chipset will operate with a totally new design structure, however, the emulation looks set to outperform the chipset it is emulating.
This possibility could well cause a surge of interest in the new chip, something that Transmeta would clearly be pleased about, especially since the firm has only designed its new processor and will not be manufacturing it.
Today's Wall Street Journal said that Transmeta is headed by CEO David Ditzel, a former chip designer who has worked for AT&T's Bell Labs and Sun Microsystems.
Transmeta's affiliates include an illustrious cast of characters, including designers such as Linux creator Linus Torvalds and investors such as Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and billionaire financier George Soros, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The Wall Street Journal added that reporters and analysts have been told to plan to spend the better part of Wednesday with Transmeta at a 175-acre historic estate and villa in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
