BullGuard Mobile Security for Android debuts cloud-based antivirus engine

BullGuard has unveiled BullGuard Mobile Security for Android, its latest all-in-one security package for Android mobile devices.

The $19.95 (3 devices, 1 year) release introduces a new cloud-based antivirus engine, which should improve accuracy while removing the hassle of regular updates, improving performance and keeping battery-draining system load to a minimum.

A new Call Manager automatically blocks spam from short code numbers (anything with 5 or less digits). Other numbers may be added manually, from your contacts or call history. A Blocked Items tab shows you what has been blocked recently, and a Whitelist ensures trusted numbers can always reach you.

A revamped backup tool offers one-tap backup for your contacts, calendar and messages. Sadly, while it can also back up your files (music/ video/ pictures/ more), you’ll need to purchase backup space for these separately. This isn’t cheap, either, with prices starting from an extra $8 for 5GB, to $130 for 100GB.

Elsewhere, BullGuard’s antitheft system provides various tools to deal with missing hardware. A Scream function locates devices nearby; GPS location picks up just about everything else; you can remotely lock or wipe a device, and there’s an option to automatically lock the device or wipe data if anyone tries to change the SIM card.

Much as before, Parental Controls allow parents to monitor installed apps, calls, messages and pictures, as well as locating a device from any browser.

All this comes packaged in a cleaner, more straightforward interface. BullGuard’s Mobile Security Manager (MSM, its web management interface) has also seen a visual revamp, with new tabs making it easier to manage multiple devices.

Its backup plans are a little expensive, but otherwise BullGuard Mobile Security for Android looks like a capable package, offering solid all-round security with plenty of essential extras. Prices start at $16.95/ year for 3 devices, $20.95/ year for 5, and there’s a 15-day trial available if you’d like to try before you buy.
