Google launches $200 Chromebooks by Xolo and Nexian in India

At an ongoing event in New Delhi, Google launches two new Chromebook models from Xolo and Nexian. Aimed at the education sector, both the Chromebooks are priced at Rs 12,999 ($200), and go on sale starting today.

The Xolo Chromebook sports an 11.6-inch display of 1366x768 pixels resolution packed in a glossy plastic body. It is powered by a quad-core Rockchip Cortex A17 processor coupled with 2GB RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. The notebook flaunts a decent enough keyboard with tactile feedback.

The Nexian Air Chromebook has a matte finish and looks the better of the two models. As for the specifications, the Nexian Air sports the same hardware modules as the Xolo Chromebook. If the 16GB storage seems inadequate, the company is offering users 100GB Google Drive space valid for two years with either of the Chromebooks.

For those who are unfamiliar with Chromebooks, it is a notebook from Google that runs on the company's Chrome OS. Chrome OS can be best described as a desktop operating system which largely revolves around the Chrome web browser.

In comparison to Windows, which has a large library of applications that one can install natively on the computer, ChromeOS only offers web apps and extensions that can be run on the web browser.

That said, it should be enough for people who use a computer only to check emails, write documents, do minimal photo editing, and surf a lot of web pages. The Mountain View-based company last year introduced support for offline media playback, allowing users to run media files even when offline.

The company has also introduced support for a number of Android apps including Duolingo and Flipboard. At the event, Google representatives demonstrated VLC, a popular media player running on the Chromebook.

Both the Chromebooks are now available for purchase through e-commerce portal Snapdeal. The company also announced Asus Chromebook Flip C201, and a new Chromebook from Samsung. Both will be launching in the coming months.
