Gmail for Android now does money transfers

If you need to transfer money, there's no lack of options nowadays. Of course you can always use dinosaur-like methods, such as ACH or wire transfers from an old-school bank, but in 2017, there are many apps and services that can move the funds too, such as PayPal.

Today, Google introduces yet another way to move funds, but no, it is not a new app or service. Actually, it is an existing app that is already installed on most Android devices -- Gmail. Yeah, you can now send and receive money using the email client on Google's mobile operating system, just as you already can with the web version.

"You can already reliably and safely share photos and files on the go with Gmail. Starting today, you can share money, too. Whether you're splitting a dinner bill or planning a group trip, you now have a fee-free way to work out the details and settle up without ever leaving the Gmail app on Android, just like you can already do on the web. Plus, you can exchange money with anyone -- not just people with Gmail addresses," says Sam Kansara, Product Manager, Google.

Kansara further says, "Recipients are able to receive or request money right from the email itself -- without having to install another payment app. They can even arrange for money they receive to go directly into their bank account. Either way, it's completely free for both of you."

As you can see in the above image, sending money through Gmail for Android couldn't be easier. You simply tap on the paperclip icon like you were sending an attachment, but then, rather than select a file, you tap on "Send Money." Then, you are presented with the ability to select a dollar amount. Voilà! The money is now sent. You can use the same process to request money too.

For now, this mobile payment option is limited to Android, sadly. Hopefully Google will eventually bring this to the iOS version of Gmail too.
