How enterprises are using data to get work done

A new study by content management and collaboration specialist Egnyte has analyzed 25 Petabytes of customer data and four billion of the activities they performed.

This has been used to uncover unique insights about the way businesses are managing their data and how their employees are collaborating on it.

Among the findings are that hybrid content has grown by 83 percent year-on-year, while 41 percent of content resides in on-premises storage. New types of content are affecting storage use too and this trend is likely to continue as video is expected to claim 80 percent of web traffic by 2019.

"Looking back at our team's research, we found something very interesting about volume vs. storage, which may shock a lot of businesses," says chief strategy officer Isabelle Guis writing on the Egnyte blog. "We found that video files only took up one percent of the content in terms of quantity (number of files), yet they accounted for 20 percent of the storage volume. So let's say only 100 of a company’s 10,000 files are video. This may look like a small footprint, but in reality it is using up 20 percent of their storage capacity."

When it comes to how employees are using data, the study shows that Windows is still king of the desktop with 75 percent of desktop work done on the Microsoft OS. On mobile, however, iOS dominates with 82 percent of work done.

Google Chrome has a big lead in the browser market with a 61 percent share compared to Internet explorer on 18 percent and Firefox on 12 percent.
