Virtualization company Parallels has released a new beta of its server virtualization software for Intel-based Macs.

Parallel's application allows an enterprise IT department to virtualize server environments, thus saving money on hardware needs. By definition, the platform is a "bare-metal hypervisor."

iPhone Software 2.0 provides clues to 3G model

Hackers who have diligently worked to keep the iPhone unlocked have recently discovered something buried in the code which reveals the chipset of the 3G model.

An entry used to refer to the phone's chipset is listed as "SGOLD3," which is the nomenclature used by Infineon to refer to their third-generation chips. Teardowns have revealed the current iPhone uses the SGOLD2, the predecessor to this model.

The top-of-the-line version of the company's disc playback software will now support Blu-ray's advanced interactivity platform, the company said Tuesday.

PowerDVD 'Ultra' has already been certified for several HD formats, including Blu-ray Profile 1.1. It also supports BD+, AVCHD, and BD-RE 3.0. With Profile 2.0 support now under its belt, it becomes one of the most-feature rich disc playback applications available.

Sony will release Blu-ray recorders April 30 in Japan that allow for one-touch transfer to the PSP, Walkman, and select mobile phones.

The BDZ-A70 will carry a hefty price tag, coming in at ¥170,000 ($1,658). At the same time, it shows a willingness by Sony to embrace the growing consumer desire for media portability.

Ringing cell phones coming to a EU flight near you

Following six months of studies, the EU is finally ready to move forward with allowing in-flight cellular calls within the next month or so.

Once the plane has reached an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,850 feet), calls will be permitted. An on-board cellular tower of sorts will handle the calls, and then transfer them to the network on the ground.

Icahn allies to get seats on Motorola board

Motorola said Monday it had reached an agreement with the activist investor to place two of his allies on the company's board, one of them effective immediately.

Icahn Enterprises chief Keith Meister will be appointed to serve on the board immediately, and also be nominated for election to the board on the 2008 proxy statement. Additionally, investment banker William Hambrecht will be nominated.

PSP sees sales resurgence in Japan, but Wii again dominates PS3

While the Wii continues to dominate the Japanese market, Enterbrain reports that the PSP has once again begun to outsell the Nintendo DS.

The new sales tally for March ends a strong six-month run for the DS, where it was for the most part far outselling its competitors. The resurgence of the PSP could be explained by a refocus by Sony on the product, of which the dividends are now beginning to pay off.

Again, Microsoft stomps out Xbox 360 Blu-ray rumors

Microsoft has again quashed rumors that it will ship a Blu-ray drive in or for the Xbox 360. This time, the speculation was fanned by DigiTimes, which quoted industry sources who claimed that manufacturers had been chosen to start production of the drives.

According to the report in DigiTimes, which has had a shaky past in predicting companies' future moves, Taiwan's Lite-On IT was asked to participate in the production of the Blu-ray drives for Microsoft.

Blinkx looks to IPTV with Joost-like BBTV offering

Video search company Blinkx has combined an IPTV offering similar to Joost with its speech and visual recognition technology, which is now available for the Windows platform.

In order to watch BBTV, users will need to download a small 1.8MB application that works on Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. From there, the user would be able to access a variety of videos provided by Blinkx's partners.
