Capture, edit and share your desktop with Icecream Screen Recorder

Desktop recorders are common on the PC and we’ve regularly covered them here, but does Icecream Screen Recorder have enough to stand out from the crowd?

A handy set of capture types doesn’t stop with full screen, window and freehand rectangles. The program can also capture a fixed-size rectangle around your mouse cursor, very useful when you need to focus on a particular area of the screen.

Recordings can be started, paused and resumed or stopped with a click, or a fully customizable hotkey.

The program can record audio from your microphone and/ or the system speakers, as well as including your webcam. If you’re creating a tutorial where you describe some on-screen feature, you could include a narration or a webcam view of yourself.

A whiteboard-like feature enables drawing on the screen. You could highlight a particular area of the screen as you’re talking about it, add some color, draw freehand, perhaps add some standard shapes or text.

Videos you save don’t just disappear into a destination folder. They’re displayed on a history list, and you’re able to preview them with a click, copy them to the clipboard or upload them to YouTube.

The free build does have a couple of major restrictions in a five-minute maximum recording time, and WEBM-only output format. But you can work around this by using other tools to combine videos or convert formats, and at least there are no ugly watermarks to get in your way.

Alternatively, buying the full version for around $25 lifts the restrictions and gets you more: scheduled screen recording, custom watermarks, priority support, and a lifetime license for personal and commercial use on up to two PCs.
