AOL Settles Cancellation Policy Dispute

UPDATED America Online will pay $1.25 million to about 300 consumers in New York to settle a dispute over its cancellation practices. As part of the settlement, AOL has agreed to reform its customer service policies and ensure consumers have an easier time canceling its service.

The New York Attorney General's office said that AOL employees were ignoring requests to cancel and stop billing customers and the company continued to bill them. This was due to a reward program made available to AOL's customer service representatives.

You've Got Laundry

A Massachusetts company has come up with a novel way to inform college students when their laundry is ready and what washing machines are open. Called LaundryView, the networked machines and software will allow the user to view this information from anywhere on campus.

The system was created by Mac-Gray Corporation, which claims to be the largest supplier of card and coin-based laundry facilities in America. A Web page will show the status of each machine as well as a two-week history of usage. The company says this will help students plan around the best times to do laundry.

While much has been made of Microsoft's antitrust woes in both the European Union and the United States, not much has been said about its problems in other areas of the world.

One place where Microsoft is still fighting claims of monopolistic behavior is South Korea, and that country's Fair Trade Commission said Tuesday that it is close to a decision on allegations that the company shut out local messaging clients by bundling Windows Messenger with its operating system.

The report came under fire due to its methodology, which paired two random words together and counted the number of result pages returned. Critics claimed that this method would not return any kind of real world document, and in the case of Google, was even returning other word lists or dictionary results.
