Nokia retools its E51 handset for secure workplaces

Nokia has redesigned its E51 business handset to comply with certain workplace security regulations.

The E51 handset introduced last fall was designed with business users in mind, offering a simplified interface and tight integration with Cisco and Alcatel corporate telephony (PBX) systems.

Now, for work environments that have security restrictions -- such as those that do not allow USB storage devices -- Nokia is now offering a version of its E51 with the camera removed. The 2 megapixel camera with 4x zoom that is offered in the standard configuration will not be replaced by any additional features.

Since cameras are practically a standard feature in all cell phones, highlighting a device lacking one may be a smart move from Nokia. Businesses that forbid camera phones in the workplace are many and varied: IRS centers, automotive plants, and even electoral polling stations.
