CCleaner 3.17 picks up the mess cookies leave behind

Piriform Software has released CCleaner 3.17, the latest monthly update of its immensely popular Windows cleaning tool. Version 3.17 adds wildcard support when cookie cleaning, the ability to clean the Hosts history in Firefox Aurora and Shortcuts history cleaning in Google Chrome Canary.

Version 3.17 also improves various cleanup tools and applications, plus widens its support to cover three new applications: CyberLink PhotoDirector 10, DivX Player and Snagit 11 in addition to the dozens of applications and system settings, including the Registry, already covered by CCleaner.

The new wildcard support allows users to search more broadly for unwanted cookies to clean off their computer, while the added support for features in Firefox Aurora and Google Chrome Canary ensure that when these migrate to the final release channel, CCleaner will be already equipped to deal with them.

Aside from adding three new applications to its cleaning list, CCleaner 3.17 also improves its cleaning of Windows Media Center, Windows Media Player, Game Explorer, Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 and Vuze, while enhancing its BitTorrent detection.

Other improvements include better cleaning for saved forms and history in Google Chrome, IEAutoComplete Form History and Saved Passwords in Internet Explorer and shortcut cleaning in Windows 8.

The option that pops up to prompt users to close running browsers has also been tweaked, while the program’s JumpList menu has also been altered to prevent potential locking up of the user interface. These changes and improvements are joined by a number of unspecified “minor” bug fixes and improvements.

CCleaner 3.17 is available now as a freeware download for PCs running Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). A portable version of the app is also available, as is a separate OS X application, CCleaner for Mac 1.01 FINAL.
