Microsoft Offers Chance to Meet Bill Gates
Microsoft sees a marketing opportunity in rewarding Windows enthusiasts for sharing their experiences. Five customers that qualify as winners in a sweepstakes called "Start Something Amazing" will receive an award and a trip to Seattle to meet Bill Gates.
Start Something Amazing lays the groundwork for a national advertising campaign that will attempt to brighten and revitalize the brand image of Windows.
Customers may submit personal experiences in 300 word essays to Microsoft that fit into the following categories: Culture & Community, Music, Memories, Home & Lifestyle, and Sports & Games. Aside from an award and chance to meet Bill Gates, winners in each category will be endowed with $5,000 USD in Windows gear and prizes provided by participating media outlets.
One lucky contest winner will be featured in one of the Start Something Amazing TV spots.
"Whether it's raising donations for favorite causes or recording a first album, the incredible advancements in technology and the Windows platform offer individuals greater opportunities to follow their passions," said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect at Microsoft.
Microsoft has found that 75 percent of customers believe technology has made it easier to pursue interests and hobbies outside of work. "With Windows, people have a vast choice of tools, applications and devices to start anything they like," Gates said.
Industry analyst Michael Cherry from Directions on Microsoft, however, feels that Microsoft may be barking up the wrong tree. "I think XP has been well
promoted for home or consumer users. What Microsoft has not done, is explain adequately why businesses should upgrade. Here 'cool' features are less important then improvements in security, reliability, and most importantly - productivity," Cherry told BetaNews.
Customers may enter the contest at the Microsoft Windows homepage.
