Google redesigns its iPhone homepage

The company said at Macworld Monday that it will retool its all-in-one Google application for the iPhone, improving the UI and speeding up loading times.

The new UI is better suited for the touchscreen capabilities of the iPhone, Google claims, and applications such as Gmail and Calendar have been sped up.

Eye-Fi to improve Mac support for wireless memory card

After announcing a deal with Lexar last week to distribute its technology, Eye-Fi moved onto Macworld Monday, announcing support for Leopard and Safari.

Eye-Fi will now be able to upload photos directly into iPhoto, which eliminates the need for manual import as users must do now. It will also support uploading to any of the 19 providers that the Windows version supports.

Clues point to launch of 'MacBook Air' at Macworld

Although its not clear exactly what it may be, Apple looks set to launch a new model of its MacBook which could signal its entry into the UMPC space.

Speculators are pointing to an Adium usage log report from January 9, that shows an entry for a "MacBook Air" that was made before the first inklings of such a name came out. Additionally, Macworld posters have been spotted with the phrase "there's something in the air" on them.

Network Solutions under fire for domain registration practice

The Internet registrar is being criticized for its practice of putting holds on domain names that searchers on its site may not look for but not immediately register, although it since has backed down.

The company was removing the name from the pool for about four days. During that period, the customer could come back to register their name with Network Solutions for $35 per year, but it would be unavailable from other registrars.

While there are several tools already out there that do the same thing, this is the first ones to actually allow iPhone users to perform the same function.

The iPhone and iPod Touch use a completely different operating system than their predecessors, which likely had a lot to do with why it wasn't possible. However, Xilisoft has apparently figured out a way around that issue.

With the last remaining label of the big four to join the online retailer's new music store, it could be argued that DRM is essentially dead.

Last week, Sony announced its plans to go DRM-free. It did not name any distribution points at the time, although analysts speculated that Amazon would eventually carry Sony's content.

Lexar to put Wi-Fi on a memory card

The memory chip manufacturer will use technology from Eye-Fi to add network connectivity for users of its own memory cards.

With wireless built onto the card, users will be able to send pictures directly from the camera to the computer. While Eye-Fi already has released its own card based on its technology, it sees Lexar as a way for Eye-Fi to gain mass appeal.

WeBot adds video streaming to its media service

The service had already been offering users a way to stream photos and music from their computers, and its provider announced at CES that it will soon add video to the mix.

The new functionality was demoed on a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, for which WeBot built a custom interface in order to take advantage of the device's feature set. Video would be integrated with the other content types already supported.

GameStop reports strong holiday sales, Wall Street passes

Despite the generally bad news thus far from many US retailers about this holiday season's sales, the nation's largest gaming retailer has posted stellar results.

Holiday same-store sales for GameStop shot up some 20% over the previous year, with total sales increasing 35%. GameStop's success even gave it enough confidence to raise its 2007 fiscal guidance by 13 cents per share.

ArcSoft demos new embedded digital photo software

The company debuted new software to provide more functionality for manufacturers aiming to offer consumers ways to display their digital photography.

Several of the new functions in the platform revolve around its FaceTracking technology. For example, the software will use the face to intelligently rotate the picture to the correct orientation. It will also be able to zoom and pan across faces on the picture using that same technology.

Although it is intended primarily for GPS applications, uPlay is saying the new features makes its latest device 'the Apple iPhone of GPS.'

Dubbed the uPro, the device will make its first appearance at the 2008 PGA Show in Orlando next week. Along with the GPS functionality, it also includes laser technology, which a golfer could use to measure distance.

Verizon to bump up its DSL speeds to cable levels

With its FiOS rollout not exactly moving at lightning-fast speed, the company announced it was rolling out faster DSL service in about 400 communities.

The speed bump would erase most of the speed advantage that cable Internet currently enjoys over its rival. Speeds of up to 7 Mbps can be attained, and pricing would start at $39.99 with an annual service contract.
