Marketers underestimate GDPR's ramifications
Awareness of the GDPR has gone up, but B2B marketers are still falling behind and underestimating the impact of the new regulation, according to a new report by the DMA.
More than a quarter of businesses (28 percent) still feel unprepared, which is just a two percent decrease, compared to earlier numbers. The number of marketers that have a "good" awareness about GDPR has risen 13 percent, to 66 percent in total, the report claims. B2B marketers, however, are at the both ends of the spectrum.
More than a quarter (26 percent) of marketers believe their companies are still unprepared for the GDPR. More than half (56 percent) feel prepared, and a small percentage (five percent) think it’s not their responsibility. Two thirds (68 percent) say their businesses would be ready in time.
Profiling, legacy data, and consent are the biggest concerns for marketers.
Chris Combemale, CEO of the DMA group, comments: "May 2018 should be a date that is in every marketer’s diary, giving us around 16 months before the GDPR comes into force. It is concerning that only half of our industry feels their businesses are prepared for the new rules and not that many more believe they will be ready in time. The finish line for GDPR readiness is fixed and the risk to businesses of not being compliant is significant. Our advice is to continue preparations in earnest over the coming year. Not making it across the line in time is not an option."
