Microsoft's Windows marketing campaigns through history are unintentionally hilarious

Windows-slogans

Every generation of Windows -- well, from Windows 95 onwards at least -- has had a catchy slogan, designed, in some way, to encapsulate what the software giant hoped the OS would bring to users.

With Windows 95, for example, it was "Start me up", because that was the first time Microsoft’s operating system came with a Start button and menu.

iPhone 13 Pro is 'Apple’s most "Pro" iPhone yet' -- which means it's not for most people

Apple_iPhone-13-Pro

Apple today unveiled a number of new products and -- with the exception of the redesigned iPad mini 5G -- there wasn’t much to get excited about.

Sure, the new iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini look good, and sport a number of improvements, especially in the camera department, but they lack the wow factor of previous new models. Of course, the new iPhone 13 Pro -- and super-sized iPhone 13 Pro Max -- is where the smart buyers are going to look right? Probably not.

Apple unveils iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini -- better, but little to get excited about

Apple_iphone13

Every year, Apple takes the wraps off its next generation of iPhone. Some years the new model is revolutionary, and other years, merely evolutionary. iPhone 13, revealed today, definitely falls into the latter class.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty to recommend the new phone, but if you already own the iPhone 12, or iPhone 12 mini, or even a generation or two further back, there’s no need to rush to upgrade.

Apple Watch Series 7 has a larger screen and greater durability

Apple_watch-series7

I own an Apple Watch Series 6, and I love it. I owned the original Apple Watch too -- which was a bit meh, if I'm honest -- and it’s been interesting to watch -- pun intended -- how the device has evolved and improved over the years.

Today, Apple unveils the Apple Watch Series 7, and the big changes here are a larger, more durable screen with thinner borders, faster charging, new aluminum case colors, and not a lot else.

Watch Apple reveal the new iPhones, here live

Apple

It’s that time of year again, when Apple is set to unveil the next generation of iPhones, believed to be called iPhone 13 (they're not superstitious in Cupertino, California).

It is expected that Apple will showcase four different iPhones, with the lineup of models the same as last year, so expect to see iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Mini.

Windows 11 Preview builds are like buses. You wait a while for one, and two arrive at once. Today the software giant releases two separate builds -- one for the Beta and Release Preview Channels, and another for those on the Dev Channel.

Dev Channel flights, like Build 22454, deliver new features and changes separate from the version of Windows 11 which is set to begin rolling out next month.

Microsoft releases Windows 11 Build 22000.184 for Beta and Release Preview Insiders

Windows 11 laptop

With Windows 11 set to start rolling out to compatible PCs from next month, Microsoft is hard at work identifying bugs and other problems with the new OS, as well as adding some further polish.

Windows 11 Build 22000.184 adds some improvements to the first version of the operating system, and it’s different from the new build released to Dev Insiders today.

Amazon announces its own 4K Fire TVs with Alexa voice control

Amazon-Omni

It’s been rumored for a while that Amazon was planning to make its own smart TVs -- rather than just partnering with other television manufacturers to offer 'Fire TV Editions' (sets with Fire TV and Alexa built-in) -- and today the retail giant confirms this with the announcement of two new 'Amazon-built' smart TVs -- the Amazon Fire TV Omni Series and Fire TV 4-Series.

The Fire TV Omni Series is Amazon’s premium offering and it comes with far-field voice controls so you can talk to Alexa from across the room. Alexa voice controls are always available, even if the set if turned off. Don’t worry though, you can disable this feature if you’re not keen on the idea of a television set listening to your every word.

Microsoft Start is a personalized news feed for Windows 11, Android, iOS and the web

Microsoft Start Main

We live in a world where there’s so much information that keeping on top of it all can be nearly impossible. According to research commissioned by Microsoft, people "spend seven hours a day online, use six different feeds on a regular basis and check their feeds five times a day".

To help combat this, the software giant is introducing a personalized news feed called Microsoft Start, with news from premium publishers that’s tailored to your interests.

Microsoft releases Windows 11 Build 22449 -- the first of the more experimental builds

Windows 11 magnifying glass

If you’re a Windows Insider in the Dev Channel, you’re about to start getting less stable, more experimental builds of Windows 11.

Build 22449, released today, follows on from Build 22000.168 released last week. The big leap in version numbers is because this new build is the first to come from the active development branch (RS_PRERELEASE).
