Coming Soon: Windows 2000 Embedded

Microsoft is reportedly close to a release of the embedded version of Windows 2000, which will be capable of running custom applications built by third parties. Primarily used for back-end devices and other devices such as Internet appliances, the embedded version will allow developers to create custom applications and operating systems for various appliances.
Its predecessor, Windows NT Embedded 4.0, makes use of the Win32 API to allow customization of applications and the OS itself via built-in tools provided by Microsoft. Windows 2000 Embedded is said to be an extension of that embedded operating system.
There are several companies ready to distribute software using the product, one of which is IBM, who will be releasing a server appliance named Pine Hill that enhances Internet access speeds.
