Yu Yuphoria -- Yureka's successor -- is the latest dirt-cheap Indian smartphone at Rs 6,999 ($100)
At an event in New Delhi today Yu Televentures, a Micromax Mobile-owned subsidiary, launches Yu Yuphoria, the successor to its fairly successful dirt-cheap smartphone Yureka it launched late December. The Yuphoria is a stripped down version of the Yureka -- knocking Rs 2,000 off the original price -- making the smartphone enticing at Rs 6,999 ($100). The phone will become available for sale starting May 28 in flash sales. The registration for the first flash sale will begin today at 5PM on Amazon India.
As for the specs, the Yuphoria packs in a 5-inch HD display coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core 64-bit paired with 2 GB of RAM. As for the camera, the Yuphoria comes with 8-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors.
The company continues its partnership with Cyanogen Inc and is lacing its software on the Yuphoria. The phone ships with CM 12s software which is based on Android Lollipop. It packs in a 2,320mAh battery, which as the company claims, will keep the phone running all day. On the connectivity front, the dual-SIM capable phone supports LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
The Yureka was launched in India in December of last year. The device boasted a 5.5-inch IPS display of 720p screen resolution. It is powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor coupled with 2 gigs of RAM, and 16 gigs of expandable internal storage. On the camera front, the Yureka featured a 13-megapixel sensor on back and a 5-megapixel upfront.
While Yureka was a successful project -- selling thousands of inventories in its weekly flash sales -- the phone to a very large extent couldn’t stand up against the competition by the likes of Xiaomi’s Redmi 1s and Redmi Note, as well as Lenovo A6000, A7000, and A6000 Plus. It will be interesting to see how well the Yuphoria manages to fare against the ever growing competition.
In addition to the Yuphoria smartphone, the company also launched the YuFit, its first wearable gadget. The fitness tracker will let users keep track of their calorie intake as well as view notifications from your smartphone. It is priced at Rs 1,000 ($18).
