OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 will get Android O
OnePlus has been great when it comes to supporting the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3. The company has released a ton of software updates for the two flagships, including an upgrade to Android 7 Nougat. But it will not be long before Google takes the wraps off Android O, so what can users expect?
First of all, we do not know exactly when Android O will be introduced, but it is likely that Google will stick to a late-summer/early-fall release schedule. But the good news is that OnePlus will update the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 to Android O.
OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau has confirmed this on Twitter but, because Android O is not official yet, there is no estimate as to how long it will be take before it is available for the two flagships.
This is actually a welcome improvement because the way that OnePlus handled major software updates previously meant that owners of the previous flagship couldn't count on their device getting a new version of Android. Case in point: while the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 got Android 7 Nougat in late-December, the OnePlus 2 has yet to receive the same treatment.
There is something to keep in mind here. The OnePlus 5 will be unveiled soon, this summer, and it is likely that it will ship with Android 7 Nougat. Why does this matter? Well, because the software update to Android O for the upcoming flagship killer will most likely take precedence.
It is possible that the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 will be upgraded to Android O at the same time as the OnePlus 5 but, as I said above, that is not likely. It could take a few months for the OnePlus 5 to get Android O, and then a few more months for it to be available for the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3. A (pessimistic) estimate would put the release date sometime in early-2018.
