Microsoft Supercharges X-Box

Microsoft has reportedly decided to up the processor in the upcoming X-Box gaming system from its original 600MHz design to a new Pentium III 733Mhz chip. Considering that will be about half the computing power of Chipzilla's fastest processor by the time X-Box hits the store shelves, Microsoft responded by saying that the graphics card will be performing so much that a 1GHz processor would sit idle for one third of the time anyways. The hardware in the gaming console is expected to have a 2-year lifetime. Visit Microsoft for more information.

Aimster and Intel Together?

A short time ago new software hit the Internet that allowed a Napster-like exchange of music and files through America Online Instant Messenger. The new software, entitled Aimster, has reportedly attracted a million users to date, an explosive growth rate. Now officials at the company have told Reuters that they are currently holding discussions with Chipzilla Intel about a strategic partnership. Not only are they currently talking, but they were approached by Intel, and not the other way around. A representative for the Aimster development team told reporters that he hopes to one day work out a deal with AOL, however that seems unlikely considering Gnutella was cancelled in no time when the online giant caught wind of the project. Keep checking back as the story develops.
MSN Preview 2 Available

Microsoft has released the second preview of the much anticipated MSN Internet access/browser software. Formerly named MSN Mars, the new software combines virtually every feature including instant messaging, Hotmail, Internet access, and more. The goal of the new software is to directly compete with AOL in the "newbie" market and grab some of the market share from the now-dominating AOL. Thus far reviews of the new preview have been a far cry from good, noting its lackluster performance overall. Keep in mind however, that the feature list is incomplete and the software is still a preview release, another term for beta, meaning it is going to be buggy and incomplete. According to the Web site, upon download and installation you will be sent an e-mail with details about entering the MSN Explorer Sneek-a-Peek $20,000 Sweepstakes. Visit MSN to download the software.

Tag Team Instant Messaging

According to a Reuters report, the IMUnified organization says it has completed technical specifications for a unified instant messaging client. As you may recall, America Online is not a part of that coalition, after many requests from the participants for the online giant to join. The battle over a unified client has gotten heated in the past, and looks like it is taking a step in the right direction. The group hopes to have the new standard implemented amongst its members by the end of this year. AOL has promised interoperability once security and privacy issues are satisfactory to the company.
MS 25 Years Later

It suffices to say that Microsoft has come a long way since its inception in 1975. In those 25 years, the company has moved from a basement operation to its "campus" based in Redmond, Washington. It seems that everyone is talking about the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Redmond giant, and its ups, downs, and all arounds. The company has been called many things, including an official government ruling that it was a monopoly, but no one ever said that Bill Gates did not make the company successful.
There was a movie out once called "Pirates of Silicon Valley," that basically depicted the beginning of the personal computer and how Bill Gates and Steve Jobs did battle over creating the GUI and the best operating system. A lot of things have happened since Xerox researchers in Palo Alto created the mouse and GUI, and both Steve and Bill stole it from them. Boy I bet execs at Xerox are kicking themselves now.
