Who's Laughing Now

The 16-year old boy charged by the SEC with civil fraud has had the last laugh in the case. After paying is penalty of $285,000 he still managed to walk away with half a million dollars from the scheme. The boy made his money by buying low-priced stocks in large quantities, boasting about the stocks on financial message boards, and then selling the stocks within 24-hours after prices rose. This "pump and dump" scheme managed to make him an enormous amount of money before the SEC filed charges. In his "60 Minutes" interview, the boy said he made about $800,000 the SEC did not charge him for. He has already bought a Mercedes for his family.

Sophos, the anti-virus specialist, advised that users have nothing to
fear from the recent rash of script viruses - provided, of course,
that they install a patch from Microsoft to protect them.

AOL IM for Your Phone

SprintPCS has finally done it. Beginning yesterday, the company began offering the immensely popular messaging software on its Internet-ready phones. There is no service charge to use the software, according to the Reuters report, as Sprint becomes the first to offer the service on phones. Many Palm users can connect to ICQ via a wireless modem, but this is a first for the mobile phone industry.

Beta Testing Opportunities at GlobalSCAPE

The guys over at GlobalSCAPE sent word that they are now taking applications for three new programs due to launch in the first part of January 2001. The new trio of Web applications takes the usual "Cute" style and applies it to two new areas of the Web, while dramatically improving one existing area that CuteFTP dominates in.

AMD Drops Prices, Debuts 1.2GHz Processor

In the usual fashion, Advanced Micro Devices has one, debuted a new chip running faster than any of its predecessors (including its competitions) and dropped prices on those predecessors. The 1.2GHz Athlon Thunderbird was officially introduced today, along with its low-end brother the 800MHz Duron.

In the price wars, the 1.1GHz Athlon Dropped from $853 to $460 USD, the 1GHz from $612 to $350 USD, and the 950MHz from $460 to $282 USD. The 1.2GHz screamer will retail for $612 USD, its 800MHz Duron brother retailing for $170 USD.

DesktopX Preview Available

The hard-working guys over at Stardock have sent word that the first public debut of its up-and-coming software DesktopX is happening right now. The team has been working very hard on this new program, after completion of the newest version of Stardock's flagship software WindowBlinds, which premeired on BetaNews a few months ago. DesktopX is set to revolutionize the Windows interface, with a host of capabilities and functions to change just about everything you could want to.

According to documentation on the Stardock Web site, with DesktopX "A user can replace their Start bar, system tray, task list and everything on their desktop with DesktopX objects that can do the same things but with a much greater degree of customization and functionality. Because DesktopX objects (unlike icons and other GUI elements on Windows) can send and receive messages, they have all of the abilities of a full blown program without any of the overhead of running separate programs. Users have control over what degree of customization they desire."
