Be, Inc. Delivers as Promised

Be, Inc. has made good on its promise to deliver the high-power digital media operating system BeOS 5.0 to consumers free of charge. Menlo Park, CA was buzzing this morning when Be, Inc. made the operating system available for download from its Web site, be.com. Tagging along with the operating system is the developers kit and a library of programs at no extra cost.

BeOS 5.0 Personal Edition, which is available at no cost from Be, Inc., has a unique feature which allows it to run from within the Windows Operating system as a regular file. Upon executing the application, it reboots your system and runs BeOS from within a completely enclosed file on your hard drive.

Copy DVDs to VHS With Playstation2?

The popular British Web site, The Register, is reporting that some of its readers and several Japanese Web sites devoted to the Playstation, have learned how to copy DVD movies to VHS tapes via the Playstation2 gaming console. The report said such copying can be done via the RGB port on the back of the console. Although the Playstation was not designed to play DVDs, it can be done using software on the console's memory card. Schematics for taping DVDs have been published on those Playstation Web sites. SQL Service Pack 2 Released

Microsoft has released Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 7.0 and Microsoft Data Engine. This patch addresses several issues discovered since their shipment, and comes in two installments to break up the large download. Microsoft recommends this patch on all new installations, as it contains the fixes in Service Pack 1 as well, and can be applied to programs with SP1 currently installed, or programs without it. Coming Soon: Windows 2000 Embedded

Microsoft is reportedly close to a release of the embedded version of Windows 2000, which will be capable of running custom applications built by third parties. Primarily used for back-end devices and other devices such as Internet appliances, the embedded version will allow developers to create custom applications and operating systems for various appliances.

Its predecessor, Windows NT Embedded 4.0, makes use of the Win32 API to allow customization of applications and the OS itself via built-in tools provided by Microsoft. Windows 2000 Embedded is said to be an extension of that embedded operating system.

Windows Net OS?

Microsoft is reportedly set to begin work on an Internet-based version of its flagship software, the Windows operating system. Its Chief Financial Officer told reporters that the software giant is pushing a massive amount of money into the project, what many believe to be a majority of its $3.8 billion research and development budget.

Focusing on seven key areas, Microsoft aims this new operating system at business-to-client, and business-to-family contacts. Examples include doctor appointments, work schedules, and flight times, which would be made available directly from the Web, making it easy for both the company and the employee or client.

Indiana University Reinstates Napster...Temporarily

In a suprise move by university officials, the popular MP3 search program Napster will be reinstated after being blocked for more than a month. Indiana's student newspaper, the IDS, reported that the servers will be reopened for two weeks beginning this Saturday at 6 a.m. Indiana and Napster worked in conjunction to develop a new method to lower network traffic that permits the downloading of multimedia files, which will be used in this trial period.

This new method will allow users to search as normal, then internally locate the requested file as close to campus as possible.

POPcaster Beta Testers Wanted

POPcast Communications Corporation has announced a new beta version of their digital video conversion and encoding software POPcaster. Once signed up for a free account with POPcast, users are able to download this utility and begin encoding and converting AVI, MPEG and WAV files into ASF files. SuSE - 'Easiest Linux Install Ever'

SuSE's president, Stefan Wintermeyer touted that SuSE Linux "is by far the easiest Linux installation on the market," as the company announced the shipment of its next version, 6.4, will begin April 3rd in Germany and is expected to arrive in the US on April 17th. Boasting a newly updated graphical installer and Plug-n-Play hardware capabilities, this latest version will ship with X Window Server and XFree86 4.0, as well as SuSE's proxy suite. MicroStrategy To Withdraw Stock Sale As Lawsuits Mount

Data-mining software developer MicroStrategy Inc. has filed a request with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to withdraw its follow-on stock offering, as its share price takes a licking on Wall Street and its legal department gears up for an onslaught of lawsuits.

MicroStrategy filed its RW (request for withdrawal) with the SEC earlier today.

Office 2000 SR 1 Hits Web Tomorrow

Microsoft will be making Service Release 1 for its popular office suite Microsoft Office 2000 available for download tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. PST. This release will fix a number of bugs in the office suite, including Office Setup, and can be installed on any version of Office 2000. The release can be either downloaded from Microsoft, or can be ordered on CD (site will be available Tuesday) from Microsoft.

Gnutella Lives On

Despite AOL putting the brakes on Nullsoft's development of Gnutella, the newly created MP3 download tool, new versions of the client have begun to appear on the net. The open-source community has taken control and Gnutella clones are rapidly springing up. According to a new unofficial Gnutella Web site, "In the interest of protecting those involved, it can only be said that these versions are being produced by someone with access to the source code." Amazon Puts $60 Million In 1-Hour E-Delivery System

Online retail giant Amazon.com today announced that it has pumped $60 million into online delivery service Kozmo.com and forged a three-year deal to deliver Amazon orders in one hour via bicycle courier.

"They will be one of a number of one-hour delivery service companies that we intend to work with," Amazon spokesman Bill Curry told Newsbytes. Kozmo is the first, he said. The service, which will be launched at a later date, is limited to certain Amazon orders for books, music, and toys.
