VeriSign to Buy Out Network Solutions

VeriSign Inc., said today that they plan to buy Network Solutions Inc. in a $21 billion deal. Under the deal, VeriSign, will “issue 2.15 shares of its stock for each share of Network Solutions that existed prior to a 2-for-1 split due to be completed on Friday,” according to the press release.
The companies said that the deal already has been approved by both companies' boards, but still must be approved by shareholders. Network Solutions will become a subsidiary of VeriSign and that Network Solutions chief executive officer Jim Rutt will continue as CEO of the subsidiary.
Motorola Releases HA Linux

Motorola Computer Group today announced its advanced "High Availability" Linux (HA Linux), hoping to strengthen its role in the high-availability server market for the telecommunications industry.
HA Linux will function on both Intel (i386) and PowerPC platforms, and is the first Linux to offer "carrier-grade networking, wireless and Internet applications that require 99.999% availability (or 5NINES). 5NINES availability equates to 5 minutes or less of downtime per year, both planned and unplanned," according to a press release.
AMD Set to Attain 1Ghz Crown

Advanced Micro Devices, better known as AMD, said Sunday that they plan to announce release of their first 1 Ghz processor, ahead of Intel Corporation, on Monday.
Analysts suspect that both companies will release 1Ghz processors sometime this coming week. Both companies are ahead of their own projections in the race to release the first 1Ghz processor for the personal computer. This may lead to some concerns of the amount testing done and stability of these ‘rushed’ processors. A full story will follow after the respective releases.
AIM for Your Cell Phone?

AOL reportedly plans to develop a version of their instant messaging software for Nokia cell phones, enabling Nokia phone users to communicate with AOL’s 100 million instant-messenger users.
Both companies say they plan to work together on the AOL Instant Messenger for the Nokia phones, and other wireless projects in the future.
Taiwan to use Crusoe as Mobile Standard

Transmeta Corp., who recently released their "Crusoe" mobile processor, said Monday in a press briefing that Taiwanese manufactures plan to use the processor in an array of new mobile devices, and as the standard for new mobile "Web pads."
The new low-cost chips are compatible with PC processors while consuming less power and use "on-board" software to power the chip, as apposed to the hardware alone.
Linuxcare Challenges Microsoft to Open Windows

Linuxcare, Inc. today pledged that it would support an open-source version of windows, if Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates would "live up" to his off-camera discussion with Bloomberg News Service.
According to Bloomberg, Gates "agreed with the statement that Microsoft would be willing to open the source code for its Windows software to competitors in order to settle the [Justice Department's anti-trust] case" in an off-camera discussion.

Clinton Calls for Summit on Internet Security

Due to recent high profile attacks on popular Web sites, President Clinton called for a summit on Internet security Friday. Clinton, who is expected to call for more cooperation in the booming high tech industry, hopes to bring the Internet business community together to discuss the impending threat.
In a statement, Clinton said not to expect an "instantaneous solution" to the security issues, but stressed "we're doing all we can." In further comments, Clinton said the Internet has helped bring people closer together, but has also "made for greater vulnerability for people who are just mischievous." White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said that Clinton called the summit "to talk about what our overall long-term plan is" for dealing with the threat.
VA Linux to Acqire Andover.Net for $975 Million

VA Linux System Inc., announced Thursday that it plans to acquire Andover.Net in a deal worth nearly $1 billion dollars. Andover.Net, a collection of sites for techies and programmers, acquired popular techie site, SlashDot.Org late last year. The stock and cash agreement, currently worth $975 million, calls for each Andover.Net share to be exchanged for 0.425 of VA Linux Systems’ stock. Eventually this amount would be reduced, by a plan of comprehensive cash payments totaling $60 million dollars.

Corel’s Linux to Access and Run Windows Apps

Corel Corp. announced today that it will be the first Linux distribution to offer "seamless connectivity" between the Linux operating system
and applications designed for Microsoft's Windows.
Using technology similar to Citrix’s client, which enables Windows applications to
be accessed over a network, Corel will use GraphOn software to give Linux the ability to use Windows applications via a network.
Red Hat Makes $102 Million Bid for E-Commerce Company

Linux distribution Red Hat, Inc. shares surged up 41 points today, on reports it plans to buy out e-commerce company "Hell’s Kitchen Systems." In purchasing Hell’s Kitchen, and their product, a credit card verification system, Red Hat hopes to strengthen its role as an e-commerce OS. Red Hat closed at $256 dollars a share.
Debian 2.2 Release Schedule Announced

Developers of the Debian distribution of the Linux operating system have announced the release schedule for the latest version of Debian, dubbed
"Potato." As of January 2nd, no new packages will be accepted for inclusion in the Potato release. This will result in a "freeze" of development January 16th, and allow for extensive testing beginning around the 22nd of January.
The first "Test Cycle" will start with a preparation phase lasting about 2-3 days in which the base disks and CD images are prepared. Next, the team will begin testing the code, slated to last about 10-14 days, when bugs will be noted and fixes prepared, but no actual changes made. Finally, an evaluation phase lasting 2-3 days will determine whether or not the distribution is acceptable for release. If deemed unfit, bugs within the code will be fixed and the Test Cycle will begin anew.
FreeBSD 3.4-RELEASE Announced

The FreeBSD Team announced today (12/20/99) that version 3.4-RELEASE of their BSD-UNIX is now available
for download. On the heels of 3.3-RELEASE which was shipped in October, 3.4 seeks to fix up some
bugs and improve the overall OS.
Support has been added for many new hardware components, including ISDN modems, and support for Adaptec 152x/151x/AIC-6360 SCSI controllers (previously removed).
