Belkin has been receiving a lot of unfavorable attention recently for reportedly offering to pay for favorable Amazon product reviews. The company's president, Mark Reynoso, posted a letter confirming the behavior, but attributing it to a single employee.

"It was with great surprise and dismay when we discovered that one of our employees may have posted a number of queries on the Amazon Mechanical Turk Web site inviting users to post positive reviews of Belkin products in exchange for payment," Reynoso wrote.

Belkin today announced what would have otherwise been an unremarkable piece of cabling had it not been given a name that sounds like a piece of advice.

The cable is meant to recreate on a Windows machine the Mac's built-in Migration Assistant, which is used to transfer user accounts, applications, network and computer settings, files and volumes between Macs. Migration is also an optional process when initializing a new Mac.

Microsoft said Friday that it had settled a patent infringement suit with peripherals maker Belkin. The Redmond company sued Belkin in August, saying it infringed on patents surrounding U2 technology, which allows peripherals to automatically determine if they need a USB or PS/2 connection. At the time, Microsoft complained to the International Trade Commission that Belkin was refusing to enter into licensing talks.

As part of the arrangement, Belkin would license the U2 patents in exchange for settling any litigation. Further terms of the deal were not disclosed, although the complaint asked for no financial damages. U2 has already been licensed to other manufacturers, such as Targus and Fellowes.

Microsoft sued peripheral manufacturer Belkin Tuesday, claiming the company infringed on patents surrounding a technology called U2. According to a complaint filed with the International Trade Commission, Belkin has been adding the technology that allows peripherals to automatically determine if they need a USB or PS/2 connection while refusing to enter into talks with the Redmond company.

U2 was first publicly released in March as part of a broader effort to make Microsoft innovations more widely available. Other manufacturers such as Targus and Fellowes have already licensed U2, and Microsoft says Belkin's actions unfairly hurt those companies. While Microsoft is seeking no financial compensation, it wants Belkin products with U2 included removed from the US market.
