Linux Mint 22 'Wilma' Beta rolls out: Sleek, secure, and ready for the future

Linux Mint has announced the Beta release of its latest version, Linux Mint 22, codenamed "Wilma." This version is a long-term support release, promising updates until 2029. Linux Mint 22 introduces a ton of enhancements and new features aimed at improving user experience and efficiency on the desktop.

Linux Mint 22 has improved its installation process to better localize the system while conserving disk space. Extra language packages are now removed post-installation, reducing the system's footprint. Additionally, for users installing the system with an internet connection, language packs for the selected language are automatically downloaded. Key languages such as English, German, Spanish, and French, among others, are included on the ISO, negating the need for an internet connection for their installation.

The developers over at Canonical have been busy baking a yummy new version of Ubuntu recently, and following a brief beta period, it is finally time to take the open-source operating system out of the oven. Yes, folks, the stable Ubuntu 22.04 is finally here!

Code-named "Jammy Jellyfish," Ubuntu 22.04 is an "LTS" version, which stands for "Long Term Support." Yeah, that means exactly what it sounds like. The Linux distribution will be supported for a long time -- five years to be exact. Very nice.

Ubuntu 22.04 won't be released in stable form until 2022. To be more precise, it will be officially available in April of that year. After all, that is what the 22.04 indicates -- a two digit year followed by a two digit month.

Of course, before the official release, there will be a Beta and other pre-release versions. If you like living on the edge, however, you can actually download and install Ubuntu Linux 22.04 immediately. Yes, folks, daily builds (very early versions) of the upcoming operating system are available starting today.

Linux 5.10 LTS is here as a significant kernel update

Linus Torvalds has officially announced the availability of version 5.10 of the Linux kernel. This release is significant not only because of the number of new features and fixes it includes, but also because it is a Long-Term Support (LTS) release that will enjoy five years of maintenance.

In his release notes for Linux 5.10, Torvalds also calls upon developers working on version 5.11 to submit changes in plenty of time for Christmas.
