Incipio buys Griffin

In the technology market, there are many types of manufacturers. Two such examples are those that make devices and those that make accessories for those devices. This works quite well, you see, as not only do consumers love gadgets, but they love customizing them with cases and other things too.

Speaking of accessory makers, Griffin is well known for its quality offerings. Apple users in particular have long been buying that company's products, but it makes accessories for non-Apple devices too. Today, popular case-maker, Incipio (which also owns Incase and Braven), announces that it has acquired Griffin for an undisclosed amount of money. Is this good or bad?

“Griffin has a 25 year history of designing, manufacturing and distributing iconic mobile accessories. As part of Incipio Group, Griffin strengthens our product development and manufacturing capabilities, complements our existing product lines in rugged cases, power and connectivity, and allows our brands to reach a broader domestic and international audience through enhanced distribution in the business-to-business, enterprise and education verticals", says Andy Fathollahi, Founder and CEO of Incipio Group.

Paul Griffin, Founder and CEO of Griffin Technology explains, "this is an exciting and pivotal moment for the Griffin brand. Partnering with Incipio Group provides Griffin with a strong support system and improved capabilities to continue developing accessories that people love and use every day".

You can see me interacting with an iPod touch "Survivor" case by Griffin in the video below (in my bathroom). Unfortunately, the orange color of the case would tinge photos when using the camera flash, so I could not recommend it. That aside, these "Survivor" cases are well-liked by many, and are likely one reason Griffin was attractive to Incipio.

So as I asked earlier, is this good or bad? Actually, it seems to be rather inconsequential from a consumer standpoint. Incipio intends to keep the Griffin branding alive (yay!), and it will not be shuttering the headquarters in Nashville, TN. In other words, it should be buiness as usual. Hopefully this means no jobs will be cut, but that remains to be seen.

What do you think of this deal? Tell me in the comments.
