Apple Issues 10.3.3 Update for Panther

Apple has updated its Mac OS X "Panther" operating system to version 10.3.3. Panther was un-caged in October of last year, introducing over 150 new and redesigned features.

The 10.3.3 update pulls the thorns out of Panther's paws. Some of the chief networking sore spots the release eases out include support for wireless networking PC cards, .Mac synchronization, as well as many more issues related to connectivity and browsing.

Audiophiles will notice improved DVD digital audio playback, be able to play DVD+R media with the native DVD Player application, and more DVD's that are designed to automatically play will run as intended.

Additionally, to advance its hardware support, Apple has added a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) panel in Energy Saver preferences, and improved the Fan Control system function for Power Mac G5 computers.

Other improvements include bundled support for Bluetooth 1.5, a resolution of some USB compatibility issues, and new mLAN device support.

Panther's native applications such as Apple Mail, iPhoto and Image Capture have also been patched - including an unexpected bug that crashed Apple Mail. Overall system start-up time will be reduced for some users, while many others will experience snappier application launches and livelier system response.

On the downside, there are some unconfirmed reports of post-update glitches in relation to hampered file I/O performance.

Detailed documentation of the changes introduced by 10.3.3 is available on the Apple's support Web site. Mac users can update by selecting their Software Update system preference pane, or by visiting Apple Downloads.

Standalone security updates released prior to 10.3.3 are incorporated into the download.
