Microsoft to launch Xbox Game Pass -- $9.99 a month for unlimited access to over 100 games

Gaming can be an expensive business, with games often costing $60. Starting later this spring, however, things are set to get cheaper. Microsoft is about to launch Xbox Game Pass, a $9.99 per month subscription that gives unlimited access to over 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games.

Fears that this might just mean access to a substandard set of titles appear to be unfounded -- games such as Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16 and SoulCalibur II are to be found on the list. Microsoft is quick to stress that this is not a streaming service; subscribers will be able to download full games to the console.

Even better news for those looking to save money is that should you decide you want to ditch the monthly fee but still keep playing a particular game, you will be able to purchase it at a discount. The plan is to cycle in new games each month, so gamers will have access to a constantly changing list of titles to choose from.

Announcing the new subscription scheme, Microsoft says:

Today, we’re continuing our commitment to give you more options to diversify and expand your library of games with Xbox Game Pass, a new gaming subscription service coming later this spring. Xbox Game Pass gives you unlimited access to over 100 Xbox One and backward compatible Xbox 360 games -- all for $9.99 per month.

With great games from top industry publishers such as 2K, 505 Games, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, Capcom, Codemasters, Deep Silver, Focus Home Interactive, SEGA, SNK CORPORATION, THQ Nordic GmbH, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and you will always find something exciting to play across a variety of genres.

Xbox Game Pass is first due to undergo testing with a small group of Xbox Insider Program members, and once this phase is complete it is Xbox Live Gold members who will be granted first access to the service.
