Beta Testers Wanted - AudioGalaxy Satellite Agent

AudioGalaxy has now joined the ranks with Napster, iMesh, Gnutella, and most recently Scour Exchange, to provide its users with a place to search for MP3s over the Internet. After quickly becoming a member and downloading a very small client, users can begin trading and searching for MP3s via the Internet.
The new program, entitled AudioGalaxy Satellite Agent, allows users to perform various types of searches including by artist, and browsing individual agents. Once a song is located, users need simply click the "Get It" link and the download prompt will appear. Users can even give their "satellite" a name, which can range from a full sentence (up to 50 charecters) to nothing at all.
Network Associates Beta Testing Update

Network Associates has informed BetaNews of a few updates to its beta testing program. Although testing for GroupShield Exchange, WebShield, and VirusScan 4.5, they have posted six new UNIX betas. The beta testing of engine 4070 will conclude shortly while the testing for the Netware NLM engine will run for a few more weeks. A Release Candidate for GroupShield Exchange is slated for the 11th of April, and beta testing for GroupShield Domino is set for the end of April. You will be able to download these programs from FileForum when they are released.
America Online a Monopoly?

According to a small competitor AOL is exactly that, a monopoly. Massachusetts based Galaxy Internet Services has filed in Boston this week, charging AOL with prohibiting competition with its new software and business practices. Galaxy sued AOL last year with the claim that version 5.0 of AOL's software intentionally blocked rival ISPs from providing service to AOL users. Scour Joins File Transfer Battle

In an effort to throw itself into the file exchange market, Scour, Inc. has created its own file transfer program. Like Gnutella, iMesh, and a plethora of other programs, Scour Exchange does not limit itself to MP3s or any certain type, but instead allows users to transfer a range of files including .gif, .mp3, and .exe.
Users must sign up and become a member of the Scour Exchange network, which in turn allows them to trade files via the network. Chat rooms and an array of other features are going to be added in coming weeks, as Scour attempts to become king of the file trading "hill".
Microsoft Patches Office SR-1

Microsoft issued a patch yesterday for Office 2000 SR-1, after a variety of problems cropped up with the release and installation of the service release. Available from WindowsUpdate, this patch resolves several issues with the service release and Windows 2000. Many users were reporting problems with the program crashing shortly after startup. Issues with the new registration system, which added a feature to shutdown Office after a certain number of boots if it remained unregistered, should also be resolved.
Warning! New Worm Dials 911

News from Houston, Texas this weekend has left the Federal Beareau of Investigation and the city's emergency response teams scrambling for answers. According to officials at the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), a new virus has been reported from four major ISPs in the area that can not only erase the hard drive of the computer it infects, but also dial the 911 emergency number and cause officers to make unwarranted visits to homes where the call is made.
According to analysis done at the NIPC, this self-propagating script named BAT.chode.worm (with the aliases Chode, Foreskin, BAT911), "actively searches the internet for computer systems set up for file and print sharing and copy itself on to these systems."

CDNow Says Feb. Traffic Up - But Is It Too Late?

Amid doubts that CDNow can survive, the financially-troubled online music retailer today reported that the site attracted a record number of visitors last month and was the fifth largest shopping site.
Citing figures from Media Metrix, CDNow says visits rose 23 percent in February over the previous month, with 8 percent of all Web users visiting the site. CDNow was the only music site in the top 10. In a news release, CDNow recalled PCData's previously-released February list that shows it exceeded the 1 million transactions mark and outdid Amazon in visits with 13.3 million.

Web surfers tired of the "World Wide Wait" may drool over a "land speed record" logged by some high-profile technology outfits in a competition staged by the Internet2 consortium.
Making bandwidth-hungry applications such as today's streaming Internet video look like child's play, a team from Microsoft Corp., Qwest Communications Inc., the University of Washington, and the Information Sciences Institute managed to move 8.4 gigabytes of data 5,626 kilometers (nearly 3,500 miles) in 82 seconds.
