AlmaLinux 10.0, nicknamed “Purple Lion,” is officially available here, and it is a clear choice for anyone who wants RHEL 10 compatibility without spending a cent. For those unwilling (cheapskates) or unable (broke) to pay Red Hat’s subscription fees, this release feels like a gift.

Built using the new Kitten upstream, AlmaLinux 10.0 stays fully compatible with RHEL 10 while making some much-needed changes for real users. It supports hardware Red Hat left behind, restores features RHEL dropped, and keeps everything free and open.

AlmaLinux 9.6 Beta has officially been released (download here), giving Linux fans and enterprise users an early peek at what’s coming next from this Red Hat-compatible distribution.

The new beta is codenamed “Sage Margay” and is available right now for x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x systems. Keep in mind, this is a pre-release build, so don’t go installing it on anything mission-critical unless you’re ready for things to break.

The AlmaLinux OS Foundation, a nonprofit managing the community-owned open-source CentOS alternative AlmaLinux OS, has announced support for the Raspberry Pi 5. This has been a while coming as the latest version of the Pi, released in October 2023, has been growing in popularity within the AlmaLinux community.

Koichiro Iwao, an engineer at Cybertrust Japan, played a major role in bringing AlmaLinux Raspberry Pi 5 support to fruition. "In Japan, the Raspberry Pi community is vibrant," he said. "The hardware improvements of the Raspberry Pi 5 over the Raspberry Pi 4 and the community's increasing demand for this support motivated my commitment to building Raspberry Pi 5 support for AlmaLinux OS."

Microsoft's Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is friggin' awesome. If you aren't familiar, it essentially lets you easily run a Linux distribution (and commands) from within Windows 11 (or Windows 10). Best of all, you can install these distros directly from the Microsoft Store. There are many popular Linux-based operating system on that store too, such as Kali and Oracle.
