OnePlus One is best Android value -- gets permanent price cut and DropBox Pro option

drop_Blog

While the world awaits Apple's WWDC conference to learn of all the new iOS news, many of us Android users are simply shrugging our shoulders in a collective "meh". Sure, Apple makes great products, including the iPhone, but they are very expensive. Android is better positioned for those of us with more meager bank balances.

One of the best value smartphones is the OnePlus One. Normally $299, the company recently offered a temporary price drop to an eye-popping $249 for the 16GB model. Guess what fellow bargain hunters? Today, the company makes that price drop permanent. However, the fun does not stop there. You can also get a majorly discounted year of DropBox Pro if you buy the 64GB model -- a $99 value.

OnePlus One invites are dead, but OnePlus 2 will resurrect them

farewell_Blog

I am a huge gadget guy, and yet I have never owned an iPhone because it is too expensive and restrictive. Android is my mobile platform of choice for a number of reasons. It is a Linux-based operating system (sweet), it has an accessible file system (awesome), and the handsets can be affordable (woo-hoo). This is in stark contrast to Apple's rotten iOS ideology.

While the expensive (yet not restrictive) Nexus 6 is my current smartphone, I did consider a different, less costly model before I got it -- the OnePlus One. That Android phone is very affordable and powerful, but it had one fatal flaw -- a lame invite scheme. Whether invites were implemented due to strong demand or as a way to create perceived demand, it rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not into playing games when it comes to spending my hard-earned money. Luckily, this is changing. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of announcing the phone, OnePlus is killing the invite system for it. Yes, anyone can buy the One at any time (as long as there is stock). Unfortunately, not all of the news is good.

OnePlus One gets Android Lollipop-based OxygenOS -- here's how to install it

OnePlus_One_800x450_contentfullwidth

OnePlus today released the much awaited OxygenOS update for its flagship One smartphone in India. The said Android-based operating system brings a Lollipop update in addition to a set of features from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. Whether or not this is what you prefer, the OxygenOS bestows “pure Android experience”. The update is meant only for the OnePlus One smartphones sold in India.

OnePlus One global variant runs on Cyanogen’s Android KitKat-based CM 11 software. Days ahead of One’s launch in India, Cyanogen partnered with Micromax to give it an exclusive right to ship Cyanogen’s software in the country. The move spoiled OnePlus’ plan to debut in India with a bang. Cyanogen made it clear that it won’t be providing any software updates to OnePlus’ Indian variant.
Amidst the controversy, OnePlus announced that it will soon release an Android 5.0-based operating system for devices by the end of January. The company missed the deadline, but the software update is finally here. And so are a couple of other confusions.

OnePlus unveils $20 DR-1 miniature drone

OnePlus DR-1

OnePlus, best known for its One "flagship killer", is now looking to gain the attention of drone enthusiasts, as today it unveiled a highly-affordable remote-controlled quadcopter touted to be the smallest in the world. And, no, it's not an April Fools prank, unlike what other companies have been trying to pull in the last 24 hours.

Called DR-1, OnePlus's first miniature drone has a wingspan of only 70 mm, and four blades with a diameter of 30 mm. Given the specs, it's only going to serve as a fun little toy, and not something that you can attach a GoPro to.

OnePlus One -- the flagship killer -- to sell without invite every Tuesday

oneplus-one-header-e1418813021883-800x506

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus made a big splash last year with its OnePlus One flagship smartphone. The handset packs in the best in class hardware specifications while maintaining an enticing and comparatively cheaper $300 price tag. The phone -- which is often touted as the "flagship killer" -- however, garnered press for another reason: for just how hard it is to purchase the darn handset! But here comes the good news, OnePlus is finally cosying up with the way it sells handsets, making it easier for consumers to purchase the One.

The company sells the handsets through an "invitation" model wherein it requires a customer to have the invitation code before an order can be placed. If that wasn’t confusing already, the invitation is also pretty hard to collect. Among other ways, one has to take part in the company’s social media contests and share OnePlus related updates on their social media accounts. But those days are finally behind us...at least for one day a week. In a blog post, the company has announced that it will no longer ask users for an invitation on Tuesdays.
