Microsoft Unleashes Digital Image Suite 10

Microsoft has announced the availability of Digital Image Suite 10 which is a combination of Microsoft Digital Image Library 10 and Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10. The software giant positions the suite as an easy-to-use solution for organizing, editing, sharing and safekeeping digital photos.

Features that have been added since the 9.0 release include color-correction tools, panoramic stitching in two dimensions, one-click fixes, as well as new options to organize and share images.

Digital Image Suite 10 incorporates two new toolsets for color and lighting corrections. Access to these features has been consolidated into two central locations for more efficient editing. Some of these tools alter the luminosity, color and saturation properties of an image. Microsoft claims that its digital imaging software is the only product currently available on the market that can adjust the saturation curve.

Microsoft Research also contributed to the suite's editing feature set. According to Microsoft, its researchers developed a unique algorithm for panoramic switching that can handle multiple image files from high-resolution cameras. The suite supports both horizontal and vertical stitching.

Commenting on the feature, Jeanna Peterson, group product manager in the Home Retail Division at Microsoft said, "As customers purchase increasingly advanced cameras, they need imaging software that can keep up with their hardware. The panoramic stitching available in Digital Image Suite 10 provides the cutting-edge technology customers demand while maintaining the ease of use they expect from Microsoft digital imaging products."

The suite may have complicated algorithms stored under the hood, but some aspects of the software are intended to be downright simple. Digital Image Suite 10 includes three new Auto Fixes to correct what is calls common photography problems - including one that is specially designed for use with camera phones.

The first new Auto Fix automatically adjusts exposure; the second analyzes the color and light in images by adjusting the source lighting, color balance and saturation; the third aims to improve images taken with cellular phones by correcting color casting and noise issues.

In addition to advancing the suite's editing features, Microsoft has also provided more options for organizing photos. Some of these options include an iTunes-like five star rating system; the capacity to assign keywords; the ability to search for photos with shared criteria; and a flagging system similar to the one found in Microsoft Outlook.

Four of the six flags are reserved for commons tasks such as review, touchup, sharing and printing.

Digital Image Suite 10 is available for purchase immediately at a suggested retail price of $129 USD. Digital Image Pro can be purchased standalone for $89.95 USD. Both products are open to mail-in rebate offers.
