Alltel Extends Free Calling Options

Alltel subscribers will now be able to extend the benefits of mobile-to-mobile calling to other carriers, and even landline phones, through a new program being offered by the company. Called "My Circle," the feature would be available to those with monthly calling plans of $59.99 or higher.

The customer will be allowed to pick ten numbers that they can call free of charge for an unlimited amount of time. These numbers can be changed at any time, the company says. The new feature comes as a result of market research.

Studies indicated that customers enjoyed the benefits of mobile-to-mobile calling, however there was a desire to increase the flexibility to other mobile networks. Alltel group president of operations Kevin Beebe said there was increasing frustration over the inflexibility of this feature.

"It's all about providing more value for our customers and keeping them in touch with the people they know and love," Beebe said.

Alltel is hoping the new feature will set the company apart for consumers looking for wireless service. With over 10 million subscribers, it is far behind fourth place T-Mobile, which had nearly 22 million subscribers as of the end of last year.

The company, which operates in 36 states mainly in the South and West, says that about 30 percent of those within its footprint consider the company when looking for wireless service. Beebe said he would like to increase that number by 15 percent.

Alltel customers would be able to add the service to their plans without extending their contract, he said.
