Cingular, HP Offer First 3GSM Laptop

HP became the first computer manufacturer in the US to offer a laptop with built in support for UMTS/HSDPA technologies - specifically for Cingular Wireless. The unit is compatible with both American and worldwide 3G GSM networks due to its tri-band capabilities.

The notebook will be marketed under the Compaq brand, and jointly promoted by the two companies to business customers. It comes with the Cingular Communication Manager preinstalled, and integrated dual antennas for connectivity.

UMTS/HSDPA promises average speeds of 400-700Kbps, with bursts over 1Mbps. Cingular's 3G network is available in 145 major metropolitan areas, and 65 of the top 100 largest cities across 100 states. Worldwide, there are over 140 UMTS and 72 HSDPA providers currently offering service.

"[This laptop] is the latest, powerful example of how the collaborative efforts of our two companies have resulted in the introduction of a world-class product that will keep customers better connected, more productive and increasingly competitive in the marketplace," Cingular Wireless Enterprise senior director Laura Johnson said.

Cingular and HP first announced plans to ingrate 3G into laptops in April of this year.

Users would also be able to opt to purchase the nc6400 without the broadband connectivity and later add it through the addition of the HP Broadband Wireless Module.

The laptop features a 14.1-inch widescreen display, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and Windows Vista compatibility. The laptop will be available in late December starting at $1,599 USD. Cingular service plans vary on amount of data bandwidth required, among other factors.
