Yahoo Expands Newspaper Partnership

Yahoo said Monday that it had signed an agreement with a dozen US newspaper companies to expand its newspaper content and be the exclusive provider of paid-search services as well.

In total, the deal includes 264 newspapers in 44 states, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Denver Post, The Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Jose Mecury-News.

Yahoo first announced a deal with 150 of these papers back in November of last year. Monday's announcement nearly doubles the amount of papers partipating.

As with the original deal, it covers four areas, including advertising, search, local information, and conent. All papers will use Yahoo's platform to sell online advertising for newspaper Web sites, and will use its search functionality to create new monetization opportunities.

In turn, Yahoo will offer the newspapers' Web content, and will help syndicate their content through Yahoo's network of Web properties.

"This ground-breaking partnership creates the newspaper industry's first full-fledged integrated online advertising network and significantly expands consortium members' Internet presence," said Robert W. Decherd, chairman and chief executive officer of Belo Corp, one of the original members of the partnership.

Combined, the circulations of the dailies reach some 18.5 million readers, and their Web sites receive some 50 million monthly visits.
