Communication with disaster-stricken Japan now free across the board

Since Friday's devastating earthquake, coastal Japan has been battered by tsunamis and aftershocks which have caused billions of dollars in damage to the country's infrastructure, and have triggered a series of explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency today said it is launching a series of missions to assist the Japanese government in monitoring the radiation from Fukushima Daiichi and the potential danger that could spread from the explosions that took place there.

In response to the continuing disaster Tuesday, nearly every telecommunications company with a significant American footprint has waived some or all of the fees that would normally apply to calls or texts to Japan.

T-Mobile USA- No international long distance charges on phone calls to Japan, free Wi-Fi calls to and from Japan, and free SMS text messaging to and from Japan for T-Mobile postpaid customers through March 31, 2011 and retroactive to March 11, 2011. Subscribers can text "REDCROSS" to 90999, and donate $10 to the Red Cross. This donation will be charged to subscribers' T-Mobile phone bill.

Sprint says it is waiving and/or crediting fees for wireless calls and text messages to and from Japan for customers who are on Sprint's networks, retroactive from March 11 and continuing to April 10, 2011.

Sprint also lets subscribers freely "text to donate" to the following numbers:

Text "REDCROSS" to "90999" to donate $10 on behalf of the American Red Cross.

Text "TSUNAMI" to "50555" to donate $10 on behalf of Convoy of Hope, Inc.

Text "WAVE" to "50555" to donate $10 on behalf of the World Relief Corp. of National Association of Evangelicals.

Text "JAPAN" or "QUAKE" to "80888" to donate $10 on behalf of The Salvation Army.
