1Password thwarts hacking attempt linked to Okta security breach

Today, 1Password shared some news about a hacking attempt that happened in late September 2023. The company saw some suspicious activity on a software tool they use called Okta, which helps manage apps for their employees. This strange activity was later found to be connected to a known security issue with Okta’s support system.

On September 29, someone from 1Password’s tech team got a surprising email that helped them find this weird activity in their Okta software. They traced this activity back to a suspicious computer address. Someone unauthorized had got into the Okta software with high-level access. This situation looked a lot like known hacking attempts where bad actors get into high-level accounts to mess with security settings and pretend to be users within the company being targeted.

Three-quarters of consumers are ready to ditch a company after a ransomware attack

A new study shows that 75 percent of consumers would switch their business to another company following a ransomware attack.

The survey, from backup appliance company Object First, also reveals that consumers are requesting increased protection from vendors that hold their data, with 55 percent favoring companies with comprehensive data protection measures such as reliable backup and recovery, password protection, and identity and access management strategies.

Three quarters of organizations risk their data with poor backup and protection policies

Just 25 percent of IT professionals are following industry best practices for backing up data, according to a new study from hardware-encrypted storage maker Apricorn.

The survey details data backup, encryption and resiliency protocols for over 250 IT professionals in the United States and Canada over the last 12 months. It finds that while 93 percent of respondents say that they factor in data backups as part of their cyber security strategy, only one in four follow the 3-2-1 rule, in which they keep three copies of data, on two different formats, one of which is stored off-site and encrypted.

Two-thirds of UK IT leaders think GDPR has harmed consumer trust

Five years on from the introduction of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), 66 percent of UK IT leaders polled in a new survey from Macro4 say the regulation has made customers less willing to trust businesses with their personal information.
