Earlier this week we looked at the use of AI in recruiting and retaining staff. But that was from the business point of view. What about the other side of the coin, can you -- should you -- use AI when applying for a job?

The UK government clearly thinks so. New guidelines on the Civil Service Careers website say that tools like ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini can be used to, “enhance your application and prepare for the process”. However it goes on to caution that AI shouldn’t be used to, “provide misleading or false information at any stage of the application journey.”

Cybersecurity is booming but it comes at a human cost

According to a new survey of 302 security professionals, almost 80 percent say they have 'good' or 'excellent' career prospects, and more than 84 percent say the industry is 'growing' or 'booming'.

However, the report from The Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec) finds the industry is still plagued by issues including stress and overwork. 22 percent of respondents work more than the 48 hours per week mandated by the UK government, and eight percent work more than 55 hours which, according to the World Health Organization, marks the boundary between safe and unsafe working hours.

63 percent of IT workers are worried AI will take their jobs

While many IT workers see the productivity benefits of AI, 56 percent believe it benefits employers more than employees. Additionally, 63 percent are concerned generative AI tools might take their job in the next five years compared to 44 percent of general office workers.

These are some of the findings of a new report from Ivanti. It also looks and digital experience (DEX) and finds 58 percent still prefer dealing with a human rather than a chatbot.

The COVID-19 pandemic shone the spotlight on growing labor shortages throughout the U.S. economy. While most of the attention to find entry and mid-level workers has focused on retailers, restaurants, and other service industries, the reality is that the staff shortage is affecting Wall Street banks, construction, manufacturing, trucking, and more. The pandemic has exacerbated long-standing staffing issues for commercial insurance brokers and carriers and is driving more companies to look to technology to bridge the gaps.  

Many common dynamics are driving the overall labor shortage. As the pandemic rose and fell, more Americans reassessed which types of jobs they wanted and at what pay. The rising acceptance of remote work, elimination of the daily commute, lack of access to childcare, desire and opportunity to start a business, and simply workers choosing to leave the workforce altogether are driving the staffing gap. Experts believe the staffing challenge is not a temporary issue but, in fact, the new normal.
