Nokia Acquires Mobile Advertiser Enpocket
Nokia continued its push into the Internet services industry on Monday, announcing it has acquired Boston-based mobile marketing media provider Enpocket.
"Nokia has already announced its intention to be a leading company in consumer Internet services and we believe that mobile advertising will be an important element in monetizing those services for our customers and partners," Nokia CTO Tero Ojanpera said today.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Nokia said it expected the deal to close by the end of the year.
Enpocket has customers in the US, Asia, and Europe, including Vodafone, Telefonica, British Telecom, and Sprint. It delivers advertising across a variety of mobile formats, including SMS, MMS, mobile Internet, and video. Its customers include both carriers and the companies with which they do business, most notably Pepsico.
Indeed, the company is expanding its portfolio to not only deliver the phones themselves but the services which they would deliver. Last month, Nokia launched social network portal "Ovi," which would serve as the gateway between the device and these services.
Its logical that ads from Enpocket's clients would see their way through to Ovi services, considering the fact that Nokia will likely be looking for ways to monetize the offering, although it has not expressly said so just yet.
