II. MANAGING AUDIO FILES

In the Study

Item 12: Playing a CD

Participants were instructed to play a musical selection on the PC, from an audio CD which was provided to them (Windows 98 Group

using Windows Media Player 7, and XP Group using Windows Media Player 8).

  Windows 98
  Windows XP
  Advantage?
 Mean   6.0  6.5 XP
 Response Range   5-7  5-7 None
 Mode   6  7 XP

Item 14: Copying an Audio File

Participants were instructed to copy one song from the CD onto their hard drive – then remove the CD.

  Windows 98
  Windows XP
  Advantage?
 Mean   4.8  6.4 XP
 Response Range   3-7  5-7 XP
 Mode   5  7 XP

Item 24: Retrieving a Saved Audio File

Participants were instructed to open the song they had previously recorded on their hard drive, and play it on the PC.

  Windows 98
  Windows XP
  Advantage?
 Mean   1.4  6.3 XP
 Response Range   1-3  5-7 XP
 Mode   1  7 XP

When asked to play an audio CD, participants rated the two Operating Systems as similar. However when asked to perform more

complicated tasks, the XP Media Player was rated as easier to use. This was especially true when asked to locate and play the previously

saved musical selection.
