Long Awaited Linux 2.6 Kernel Unleashed

After months of grueling testing, Linus Torvalds and Andrew Morton released the production version of the Linux 2.6 kernel, which rests at the heart of the Linux operating system.

The kernel carries a tide of change, including features such as support for new hardware and processors, better security and improved support for laptops. On top of the new features, performance has been tweaked so that users will see a more responsive system - even with a multitude of processes open.

A July beta test introduced the new kernel testers and contributors who use Linux for a wide range of applications ranging from embedded system to datacenters to the desktop.

The 2.6 kernel's new hardware support extends to 64-bit CPUs, broader embedded chipset support, firewire, USB, and other devices. Its makers promise better plug and play, studio quality sound and broader storage access.

Performance is bolstered by faster threading, added memory support and improved disk drive efficiency.

Linux creator Linus Torvalds commented on the milestone, saying, "With the new kernel, I think we're getting closer to Linux for everyone. I think this is the best yet and I had a lot of fun working on it. I want to thank all of the contributors who joined us."

Operating systems built on top of the kernel continue to gain support as an alterative to Microsoft Windows. Recently, Novell ratcheted up its support for open source by purchasing SuSE, a major Linux vendor. Novell has also made available the first Linux-based desktop services package.

Other major industry player including Sun and IBM have developed a considerable array of Linux products and services as the open source movement forges ahead.

Sun recently struck deals with foreign governments, making inroads with the People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom with its Java Desktop System, powered by Linux.

Big Blue's latest rendition of Lotus Notes/Domino -- version 6.5 -- also includes Linux support.
